Queenslander stars in Aus karting Champs

Brendan Nelson on his way to one of his six race wins today in Ipswich
Brendan Nelson on his way to one of his six race wins today in Ipswich

Queensland local Brendan Nelson has shown an incredible burst of form at the penultimate round of the Australian Kart Championships in Ipswich, winning all three heats in two classes.

His ‘six of the best’ run was so dominant that the only foot he’s placed wrong all day is qualifying second in the TaG 125 category.

Nelson is aiming to secure four successive round wins this year in the TaG 125 class.

Jack Doohan, son of five-time 500cc World Motorcycle Champion, Mick Doohan has taken two wins in the KA2 elite junior category.

Doohan is aiming for three wins in succession in the category, however his tilt took a tumble in the second heat when he collided with CompKart Australia driver, Harrison Hoey and ended up out of the race.

Hoey was rubbed out of the race by officials for his part in the incident.

Another dominant performance was seen from Team CRG Australia’s driver Zac Crichton in a frenetic KA4 Junior category.

Crichton took three heat race victories – however the race behind him was frantic.

A train of 10 karts were involved in the race for second which went right down to the final corner.

Last round KZ2 winner – Dutchman Marijn Kremers – who drives for former V8 Supercars driver, Michael Patrizi’s Patrizicorse outfit in a Ricciardo Kart – took the pole and two heat race wins.

It has been a romp for Patrizi’s team, with Chris Hays finishing second in his BirelART chassis in both races.

Championship leader, David Sera has endured a challenging day.

Suffering engine issues throughout the course of qualifying, he was mired in the field in heat one, before being involved in a turn one incident in heat two, which saw him fail to finish a lap.

In KA3, Victorian Matt McLean took his Arrow chassis to three wins, whilst in KA2, wins were shared between Marc Tulloch and Scott Sorenson.

Dunlop V8 Supercar Series front runner Todd Hazelwood qualified on pole, however his two heat races were crueled by an on track incident in heat one and a deflating tyre in heat two.

In Cadet 9, Alex Ninovich, Dominic Attard and Ryan Tomsett shared the victories in tightly fought racing, while Fletcher Harris took two wins to Kobi Williams one in Cadet 12.

Tomorrow’s action will finalise the penultimate round of the Australian Championships, with each race being livestreamed either on Speedcafe.com or on karting.net.au.
