Hyundai team transforming TCR car into time attack weapon

When the TCR platform was conceived, the idea was that the touring cars would be capable of contesting 24-hours races — but this Hyundai only has one-lap speed in mind.

Time attack regular Daniel Truong of T-Motorsports has set about transforming a Hyundai i30 N TCR to compete in Yokohama World Time Attack Challenge.

The car already features a wide front wing and an extended splitter that extends past the engine.

More modifications are on the way, with an aggressive rear spoiler in the works by Sydney Composites.

There’s even some Supercars know-how in the mix too, with Adam De Borre contributing his knowledge to the suspension development.

The car will be driven by Super2 Series regular Bailey Sweeny, a former staple of the TCR Australia Series with HMO Customer Racing and was a race winner in the same car.

He estimates the car will be about five seconds faster than in its previous, restricted guise.

The team is currently targeting a 1m29s lap at Sydney Motorsport Park on the ‘Gardner’ grand prix layout.

Sweeny recently tested the car at SMP and more track time is expected in the lead-up to the September 4-5 event.

“A big thing with the Hyundai TCR cars is they’re so heavily restricted from the factory,” Sweeny told Speedcafe.

“They’re probably one of the most BOP’d cars in the field. They’ve got about 80 kilograms of ballast and minimum ride heights and reduced power.

“We can take all the limits off as well, which is also a big step up straight away from the standard TCR car.

“It is impressive the difference straight out of the box. We did have some issues throughout the day which kind of limited our capacity and how much running we could do.

“Straight out of the box, you can feel how much of a step up it is from the standard TCR package just in downforce.

“The tyre we’re running is a lot grippier than what we used to run. The low-speed corner and grip is also impressive.

“There are still some big plans on the way for the car. The main objective is just to get it running at World Time Attack Challenge and see what we can do.”

The team has entered the MoTec Pro Open Class, which features some of the fastest time attack cars in the country.

It’s early days in the development of the Hyundai, but there are plans to make engine modifications too.

“There are some plans to do some power mods. I don’t know how extreme Dan the car owner wants to go,” said Sweeny.

“A lot of the suspension stuff, that’s where we’ve tweaked – changing from a TCR-spec suspension to a time attack-spec suspension.

“We don’t have to make the tyre. We don’t have to do like a 24-hour race or even a 40-minute race. We’re just trying to do the one perfect lap.

“Adam De Borre has done the shocks and he does a fair few of the time attack cars, so he’s tweaked it up and the difference is pretty impressive.”
