Rare Australian touring car collection goes under the hammer

A selection of the extensive collection

The collection includes every Ford to have won the Bathurst 1000 since 1967

One of the biggest collections of model racing cars in Australia is going under the hammer in a unique online event at Lloyds Auctions.

More than 230 lots have been put up for sale without reserve by a single collector and the pieces have already attracted national and international interest.

The auction, which concludes at 10am AEDT on Sunday, includes every Ford to have won the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 since 1967 and most come most in original boxes and with certificates of authenticity (CLICK HERE to visit the auction).

The list of Bathurst Fords even includes the disqualified Eggenberger Motorsport Ford Sierra of Steve Soper and Pierre Dieudonne from 1987.

Lloyds Auctions’ ambassador, 1980 Formula 1 world champion Alan Jones, said it was one of the most thorough collections he has seen.

“If you are into collectables and you are a Ford fanatic this is for you,” said Jones.

“Every Ford that has run and won at Bathurst since ‘67 is on the list.

“It was incredible how many memories all these cars brought back.

“There is even one there with my name on it (the Colin Bond Caltex Sierra), which should make it worth more than the others,” laughed Jones.

The collection includes the majority of the cars driven by Ford heroes Alan Moffat and Dick Johnson through their touring car careers.

The Moffat grouping includes his 1976 RS3500 Capri, his Coke and Brut 33 Mustangs and a Phase 4 Falcon and Super Falcon.

Johnson’s includes his 1980 Tru-Blu Falcon complete with rock, his maiden Bathurst winner from 1981 and the rare First Rock Homes Loans and V8 Telecoms DJR Falcons from 2006.

All Marcos Ambrose’s Bathurst cars are available as well as his 2013 DeWalt Ford Fusion NASCAR.

There are also the Triple Eight Race Engineering threepeat cars from 2006, 2007 and 2008.

While Bathurst is well represented, there are also some unique offerings including a set of the first three Ford GT40s from the 1966 Le Mans 24 Hour race, which were the focus of the recent Ford v Ferrari movie.

There are also the winning cars from Le Mans in 1967, 1968 and 1975, which was the last Ford-powered (Cosworth) car to win the race.

A Mad Max Interceptor is one of the few non-racing examples up for grabs.

Early in the auction, a twin set of Moffat and Bond Falcons from their famous 1977 Bathurst one-two victory was leading the bidding race.
