David Russell claimed pole for the opening race of Porsche Carrera Cup final round at Surfers Paradise

David Russell claimed pole for the opening race of Porsche Carrera Cup final round at Surfers Paradise

David Russell’s impressive cameo in the Porsche Carrera Cup continued as he snatched pole position by a hundredth of  second from title contender Steven Richards.

Russell, who set record pace in practice, transferred his speed into qualifying with the 32-year-old eclipsing his lap record with 1.12.4167s effort.

“It’s great to come away with pole but I think we had a bit more in the tank if we needed it,” said Russell.

“The session proved to be very tight but the track was coming good towards the end of qualifying.”

The time pipped Richards to the all important pole by a mere 0.0192s with just under a two tenths of a second covering the top five.

Nick Foster will line up in third position just ahead of championship leader Warren Luff, while reigning champion Craig Baird secured fifth to set up a thrilling opening race this afternoon.

Tony Bates was the quickest of the Elite class runners in 11th position.

The first of three Porsche carrera Cup race will begin at 1320 (Queensland Time).
