Second row start for Ambrose at ‘The Glen’
Marcos Ambrose to start from third at Watkins Glen

Marcos Ambrose will start from the second row at the Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips at the Glen, the second and final road course race of the NASCAR Sprint Cup.

Pole went to Kyle Busch, with Ambrose’s Richard Petty Motorsports team-mate A.J. Allmendinger to start second.

With a lap at 203.455 km/h, Busch, the last driver to make a qualifying attempt led no less than 15 drivers to beat Jeff Gordon’s 2003 track record of 200.492 km/h.

“I was actually surprised there with my lap time,” said Kyle Busch.

“I felt like I screwed up a little bit here, a little bit there, maybe. But maybe those were good screw-up.”

Ambrose, who was fastest in Friday’s final practice session, said he could have pushed a little harder on his qualifying lap.

“It was OK,” said Ambrose.

“It was maybe a little bit too conservative.

“We’ve got a great chance to win the race and I’m really happy with our race setup.

“It would have been great to be on the front row with A.J., but we’ll start third for the race.

“It’s going to be interesting to see how it goes on fuel strategy and brake wear and all those factors that come into play on a road course.

“I’m confident for tomorrow, I’ve just got to make sure that we keep the fenders on it, look out for the brakes, and the rest will come to us.”

Denny Hamlin spun, slammed into the guard rail with the right side of his No. 11 Toyota and failed to complete his qualifying lap. Hamlin will start 42nd on an owner points provisional.

Dave Blaney, Brian Simo and P.J. Jones failed to qualify for the 43-car field.
