Shae Davies will return for more American open wheel racing after taking another win in his second meeting in the US Formula F 1600 Championship Series.
Driving a Spectrum 012-Honda for Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing at Mid-Ohio, Davies led from pole position to win the second and final race.
The win made it three wins from four starts for Davies in America over the past month.
Davies, currently fourth in the Australian Formula Ford Championship, will return to the US Formula F 1600 Championship Series’ final round at Watkins Glen International in October, and also hopes to contest the penultimate round at Summit Point later this month.
Following a tight first qualifying session on the 3.86km circuit, Davies lined up fourth on the grid for Race 1 and picked his way through to the lead. Davies looked set to take the win until contact from a lapped car with just two laps to go dropped him to third behind Matias Köykkä and eventual race winner Colin Thompson.
Davies asserted his authority in qualifying for Race 2, lapping a clear 0.353s quicker than the Mygale of Brandon Newey to take pole position for Sunday’s final race. Davies withstood a challenge from team-mate Köykkä and led comfortably from a mid-race restart to take a convincing victory.
After yet another victorious weekend, Davies credits his success to Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing and Spectrum Racing Cars.
“I really enjoyed the weekend – we had great pace and while we were unlucky not to make it two wins from two, I’m very happy,” Davies said.
“The team did an excellent job with the car. We found a sweet spot in qualifying on Sunday and my Spectrum just felt perfect. I had a good race with Matias on Sunday and then after the caution period it was all about getting a good restart and controlling the gap which I was able to do.
“Once again it’s been great to work with the guys from Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing and I’m really looking forward to returning to the series soon.”
Davies now heads back to Australia to compete in this weekend’s fifth round of the Australian Formula Ford Championship at Queensland Raceway.
