Sportscar ace John Martin will conduct a rare outing in a Supercar as he cuts laps with Walkinshaw Andretti United.
The Queenslander is set to join the Melbourne squad for an evaluation day at Winton Motor Raceway on Wednesday.
Martin has been restricted to limited running in a Supercar having spent the vast majority of his career racing single seaters and most recently sportscars.
The 34-year-old has driven an ex-Taz Douglas Super2 spec car at Mallala in 2015 following a 20 lap run at Winton in a Tasman Motorsport Holden VY Commodore in 2005.
Martin, who raced in Australian GT for Walkinshaw last year, will be joined by James Courtney who will log the permitted 10 laps as per Supercars' evaluation day regulations.
“Obviously we have known him for a few years now through the Walkinshaw GT3 program and it's great,” Walkinshaw Andretti United co-team principal Mat Nilsson told Speedcafe.com.
“He has done a lot of accomplished stuff over multiple categories and a current Supercar is something he hasn't driven before.
“I think it is good to give him an opportunity to try something different.”
The team is keen to evaluate Martin with regard to future enduro and possible Super2 opportunities according to Nilsson.
“We have been open about Super2 opportunities and dialogue with John about opportunities for him.” he added.
“It is about being able to give him the chance to develop himself and see what these cars are like should he want to do a Super2 program so he can be open to them should one arise and maybe down the track an enduro drive.”
Martin will share the track with a handful of Supercars including MW Motorsport, which is set to field three Super3 cars.
Kelly Racing was set to hold a rookie day for Garry Jacobson but has elected to reschedule the outing.
