It marked Mostert’s first win with Toyota in the Japanese marque’s Supra, joining his teammate Ryan Wood on the Repco Supercars Championship race winner list.

Behind Mostert came David Reynolds of Team 18 while Dick Johnson Racing driver Brodie Kostecki held off a late surge from Triple Eight’s Broc Feeney on four fresh tyres.

“I’m just super pumped to get a win for Toyota,” he said.

“So awesome to see Ryan get one in New Zealand, I felt a little bit left out.

“I’m totally gutted that the next race I’m starting 13th. I had a cool car then.”

At the start, second-place starter Anton De Pasquale got the jump in his #18 Team 18 Chevrolet Camaro, leaving Mostert wheel-spinning from pole position.

After a tidy first lap, it was De Pasquale who led Mostert, Reynolds, Andre Heimgartner, and Brodie Kostecki.

However, the tune of the race quickly changed on Lap 2 when Mostert got down the inside of De Pasquale at the second-to-last turn.

Mostert shoved his way through, which compromised De Pasquale and left him vulnerable to an attack from teammate Reynolds.

The Bathurst 1000 winner made the most of the opportunity, passing De Pasquale at the final turn with a love tap on the way through for good measure.

De Pasquale’s woe continued as Heimgartner got to the inside at Turn 2. Hung out to dry, Kostecki capitalised and took another place off De Pasquale.

In just four corners, De Pasquale had dropped from first to fifth.

“I had a run,” said Mostert of the overtake post-race.

“I knew I had to have a crack early at Anton. He left a small gap and I sent it in there.

“I pulled it up beside him, it was one of those ones where if he was in my shoes he would have done the same thing. I had to have a crack.”

On Lap 4, Kostecki slipstreamed Heimgartner to take third place entering Turn 6.

There was an awkward accordion effect on Lap 6 when Aaron Cameron’s #3 Blanchard Racing Team Mustang got tipped into a spin off the nose of the Rylan Gray’s #38 Dick Johnson Racing Mustang.

It was determined Grove Racing’s Kai Allen, at the back of the concertina, was at fault and given a 15-second penalty to serve during his pit stop.

Cooper Murray’s brand new Chevrolet Camaro continued to battle gremlins. He pitted on Lap 9 and parked his car in the garage with a power steering problem.

The biggest mover inside the first 15 laps was Matt Payne, who climbed seven places to 12th.

On Lap 15, De Pasquale elected to pit out of fifth and go off-strategy.

Reynolds relinquished second place to Kostecki on Lap 18 when he ran high at the hairpin and opened the door. Moments later, Reynolds pitted and took two rear tyres.

Race leader Mostert pitted on Lap 22 for right side tyres, returning to the race two seconds clear of Reynolds.

Kostecki inherited the lead, and as some of the mid-pack runners pitted he found himself in traffic looking at the rear wing of Thomas Randle’s Tickford Mustang.

Come Lap 26, Kostecki and Heimgartner pitted. In the lane, Heimgartner jumped Kostecki.

Once they pitted, it was Mostert ahead of Reynolds by 2.4 seconds while Heimgartner was another 1.6 seconds behind Reynolds.

Ryan Wood suffered a slow pit stop, which cost him a shot at a top 10 finish.

It was de ja vu between Heimgartner and Kostecki at the second-to-last turn on Lap 32 as they swapped spots again.

Grove Racing elected to run Payne long and in clear air. He finally pitted out of the lead on Lap 33. Once pitted, he returned to the race in a projected 11th and went on to finish eighth.

Feeney, on four fresh tyres, cracked the top five on Lap 36 with a pass on De Pasquale and by Lap 38 was on the rear of Heimgartner for fourth.

Come Lap 39, Feeney was through on Heimgartner at the hairpin.

Kostecki’s attack on Reynolds quickly turned to defence as he sought to keep Feeney at bay.

Kostecki fought hard and ultimately survived for third with some valiant defence.

Mostert was the winner, five seconds clear of Reynolds while Kostecki’s battle meant he finished 6.2 seconds back in third.

Feeney was fourth ahead of Heimgartner, De Pasquale, Cameron Hill, Matt Payne, Will Brown, and Jayden Ojeda.

Race 2 of the Tasmania Super440 gets underway at 4:00pm AEST.
