An untypically underwhelming weekend for the powerhouse squad was compounded by the team orders gaffe in the closing stages of the Darwin Triple Crown finale.
Series leader Broc Feeney had been running fourth in the final stint before being asked to move aside for teammate Will Brown, who was on fresher rubber.
The promise was that if Brown couldn’t hunt down third-placed Cam Waters he would hand fourth place back to Feeney before the finish.
That was then complicated by Chaz Mostert’s late engine failure, which meant the race finished under safety car and the swap was unable to happen.
The freshly-released audio reveals just how displeased Feeney was that the “shake and bake” move couldn’t be completed, leaving him behind Brown on the road.
When the safety car was initially called Feeney sarcastically congratulated the team on a “great job”, before saying, “fuck’s sake. I’m always playing this bloody team game”.

Brown for his part offered to give Feeney a position back in another race, stating that he wasn’t willing to “cop any flack” over the matter.

#888 engineer Andrew Edwards: Will, do you want to shake and bake? Or do you want to try and race Broc yourself?
Will Brown: I’m happy to shake and bake. I think that’s fair in this position. Shake and bake baby!
#88 engineer Marty Short: Okay mate, Will is going to switch back. Possible safety car. Will should switch back.
MS: Safety car, safety car mate.
Broc Feeney: Yeah, great job, great job. Now I’m stuck behind him. Great job.
MS: Yeah all good mate. We tried to do it, we tried to do it.
BF: Yeah, well why doesn’t he let off, huh? Roll down the straight. Fuck’s sake. I’m always playing this bloody team game.
WB: I’ll just let him go out of the last corner on the last lap if we get a restart, okay?
AE: Yeah, we’ve got to make sure we do it when we restart. Obviously we’ve got to go past the start/finish line. And then we can do it from there. If we can’t do this by the end, I don’t think we’re going to be able to resolve it [and] we’ll have to do it another day.
WB: Yeah, happy to do it another day. Not a drama at all. But do you reckon they’ll send us… oh is this finishing at the end of this [lap]?
AE: Yeah that’s it, we’re finishing under safety car.
WB: I know it’s not ideal, but I didn’t mean to do it so I’m not going to cop flack over it, I’ll just give him another position another day.
