Champion V8 Supercars outfit TeamVodafone have been recognised for its sporting achievements with a nomination in the Team Performance of the Year category for the fourth annual Sports Performer Awards.
The awards, which are presented by the Sydney Morning Herald, aims to be one of the most prestigious prizes in Australian sport.
The nomination marks TeamVodafone’s third-consecutive nomination for the award where the winner will receive $50,000 courtesy of Colonial First State.
TeamVodafone will be up against five teams, including the Australian Matildas (soccer), Collingwood Magpies (AFL), Australian Kookaburras (Hockey), Queensland State of Origin (NRL) and St George Illawarra (NRL).
This season has marked another incredible year for the Queensland-based team. With drivers Jamie Whincup and Craig Lowndes, TeamVodafone has won the most races and are in an almost unbeatable position in the Team’s Championship.
The year has been highlight by the double victory for Craig Lowndes and Mark Skaife at Phillip Island and Bathurst, including the incredible one-two result at Mount Panorama, where the #1 car of Whincup/Steve Owen crossed the line behind Lowndes to take a memorable one-two result.
Defending V8 Supercar Champion Jamie Whincup said it was an honour for the team to be recognised for its efforts.
“Because were so involved in motorsport, it’s hard for us to judge our success in relation to Australian sport as a whole,” Whincup said.
“We feel like we’ve been doing a great job in the championship and its awesome that we’ve been recognised for that.
“We’ve been nominated for the award three times now but haven’t yet taken out the title for the best team. C’mon guys, vote for us and make this year our third time lucky!”
