After humble beginnings Jamie Whincup has emerged to become the most successful driver in Australian Touring Car history after clinching his sixth V8 Supercar championship.

The 31-year-old made his V8 Supercar debut in 2002 and has since gone on to win 87 races, culminating in a record sixth championship triumph this season.

Whincup’s sixth title has seen him eclipse the achievements of five-time Australian Touring Car/V8 Supercar champions Ian Geoghegan, Dick Johnson and Mark Skaife.

Timeline: The rise of Jamie Whincup

1991: Started racing karts
1992: Eastern Lions Kart Club Champion – Rookies
1993: Victorian Karter of the Year – Rookies
1996: Victorian Karting Champion – Junior National Light
1998: Australian CIK Karting Champion – Intercontinental A
1999: Australian CIK Karting Champion – Formula A
2002: Won the Australian Formula Ford Championship driving for Sonic. Hired for the V8 endurance races by GRM. Finished 20th alongside Max Dumesny in Queensland 500, Bathurst 1000 DNF with Mark Noske.

2003: Finished 27th in full championship debut with GRM.

2004: Part of Castrol Perkins enduro line-up with Alex Davison. DNF in Sandown 500, 9th in Bathurst 1000.

2005: Drove with Jason Richards for Tasman Motorsports at the enduros. Third in Sandown 500 and 2nd in Bathurst 1000.

2006: Hired as team-mate to Craig Lowndes at Triple Eight. Break-out year winning Clipsal 500 and Bathurst 1000.

2007: Scored five wins including successfully defending the Peter Brock Trophy at Bathurst. Finished season with championship high second in the standings.

2008: Cracked 15 wins including five poles and a third straight Bathurst 1000 on his way to sealing a first championship crown.

2009: Hoisted 11 wins and and 7 pole positions on his way to successfully defending his championship.

2010: Cracked 9 wins and 9 poles only to be denied a third title in a nail-biting season ending round when he had to settle for 2nd behind James Courtney.

2011: Bounced back with another stunning season that comprised of 10 wins and 9 pole positions to clinch title #3.

2012: Scored 12 wins from 30 races (including 7 poles) to record another championship victory and a fourth Bathurst 1000 triumph.

2013: Continued his stunning occupation at the top of the series with a record-equalling fifth championship, joining Ian ‘Pete’ Geoghegan, Dick Johnson and Mark Skaife.

2014: Achieved the standalone record of six V8 Supercars/Australian Touring Car titles after coming from behind earlier in the season to complete the job with a round to spare.
