Uncertain diagnosis for Gardner’s broken ankle

Remy Gardner faces a nervous wait to find out if he will require surgery for a broken ankle sustained in a first-corner crash in the Moto2 race in Argentina.

Takaaki Nakagami lost control through the corner and collected the rear wheel of the #87 Tech 3 bike, throwing Gardner overboard.

“I don’t know (what happened). I was just going into the corner normal,” said Gardner, son of former 500cc world champion Wayne Gardner.

“The class is just full of monkeys on the first lap. I just got cleaned up basically and next thing I know I’ve got a broken ankle.”

The Australian is now in doubt for Round 3 of the season at the Circuit of the Americas in a fortnight’s time (April 21-23), with MotoGP medical director Dr Xavi Mir set to examine the injury when Gardner returns to his Barcelona base.

“I will now fly back to Barcelona where Dr Mir will assess my ankle which was fractured in the crash and we will decide whether or not I need surgery,” the 19-year-old explained.

Gardner has not completed a racing lap this year after he, Mattia Pasini, and Hafizh Syahrin all went down together on Lap 1 in Round 1 in Qatar.
