Twilight racing could be introduced into the V8 Supercars Championship as early as this year's season ending Sydney 500.
The championship's recently appointed CEO James Warburton has been bullish on his plans for twilight and night racing, with much discussion centred around moving races into prime time television slots in 2014.
Warburton, however, has revealed to News Limited that a proposal to have the penultimate race of this year's championship at Sydney Olympic Park run until 8:30pm is currently being assessed.
The plan does not include the addition of any track lighting; the costs of which have proven a major deterent to previous night racing pushes.
“A twilight race in Sydney is a fantastic concept which we will push for very hard,” said Warburton.
“The appeal of a late afternoon start, especially on a Saturday summer's evening in Sydney, is one we believe will be highly successful.
“I'm very keen on innovation and looking at new and different ways to further grow the sport.”
The proposal to move the Saturday race into the evening comes amid continued negotiations between V8 Supercars and the New South Wales government over the event's future.
The current deal between the two parties expires at the conclusion of this year's event.
