Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton will square off from the front-row of the grid in Sunday’s Korean Grand Prix.

The German scored his third consecutive pole position by proving 0.22s quicker than the Friday pace-setting Mercedes in Q3.

Vettel had moved to the top of the order by running a 1:37.20s lap on his first attempt in the final segment of qualifying, eventually abandoning a second run when it became clear that no one would go faster.

Mark Webber was second fastest over the first runs before also abandoning a second effort and being demoted to third by the improving Hamilton.

The Australian, who had run a lower downforce package than team-mate Vettel in qualifying to help his overtaking potential in the race, will start 13th on the grid due to a 10 place penalty earned post-race in Singapore.

Romain Grosjean and Nico Rosberg will therefore form the second row, while Fernando Alonso, Felipe Massa, Nico Hulkenberg, Esteban Gutierrez and Kimi Raikkonen complete the top 10.

The McLarens of Sergio Perez and Jenson Button narrowly missed out on Q3 in 11th and 12th respectively, with the pair separated by just 0.003s.

Webber’s countryman and 2014 replacement Daniel Ricciardo got the better of the two Force Indias to put his Toro Rosso in 13th.

Weather remains a major unknown for Sunday’s race, with rain expected to hit the circuit on Sunday.
