Onboard vision has emerged of Garth Tander’s wild moment during TCR Australia Friday practice at Phillip Island.

The 2007 Supercars champion spun wildly off the road at the fast Turn 1 right hander while testing the limits of his Audi RS3 TCR during Friday’s Practice 2. 

Tander, on debut in the category, was lucky to avoid contact but described the off as the biggest he’d experienced at the iconic Victorian circuit.

“I spoke to John Martin and Jason Bright before the weekend, and they told me they were flat through Turn 1 at Sydney Motorsport Park on a qualifying lap,” said Tander, who topped Practice 1.

“I didn’t try and go flat through Turn 1 at Phillip Island, but I did try and go a lot faster than I did the lap before.

“It didn’t work. I lost it, and then I remember the vision of Andre Heimgartner just standing on the gas and pulling it out (of a spin) at Turn 4 in Sydney, so I thought ‘I’ll do that’, but it was too far gone and around I went.

“I spun the GT car there last year, and this was way bigger than that. It took me about a minute and a half to get back on the track at Turn 2, so it was a big one.

“I didn’t hit anything. But I was going that fast backwards that a rock smashed the rear vision mirror.”

TCR Australia Round 2 continues with qualifying at 1130 AEST.
