It was a troubled start to the race for the #61 car, which spun at the Tertre Rouge with Berry at the wheel.
The second incident happened just moments later at the first chicane on the Mulsanne Straight when Berry understeered into the tyre barrier.
The Martin Berry/Rui Andrade/Maxime Martin car was later forced to retire when the right rear suspension failed 61 laps into the race.
Fellow Australian Yasser Shahin also struck trouble just after the one-hour mark when the #92 Porsche 911 GT3 R suffered a tie rod failure.
That relegated the Shahin/Richard Leitz/Ricardo Perra to the pit lane for repairs, which dropped them three laps down.
With 15 hours remaining, the #92 car is 21st in class.
