What’s next for Kurt Kostecki?

Kurt Kostecki

Amid various Supercars co-driver and Super2 announcements of late, a familiar name has been absent.

Kurt Kostecki, the 2019 Super2 runner-up, missed out on being retained at Walkinshaw Andretti United for this year’s Repco Bathurst 1000, with Lee Holdsworth coming in alongside incumbent co-driver Warren Luff.

Kostecki had made his Great Race debut last October, paired with Bryce Fullwood.

The 22-year-old mixed that effort with a partial Super2 campaign for Kostecki Brothers Racing, having spent the previous season in Triple Eight Race Engineering’s development squad.

There are no plans to return to the second-tier series in 2021, however, with securing Supercars wildcards and a co-drive his primary racing objectives.

It comes as he ups his involvement in the family Arcoweld business. Kostecki spent increased time working in Western Australia last year during the COVID-19 period, rather than returning to his Queensland racing base.

“At the moment we don’t have anything locked in concrete, obviously still because of the pandemic and things there’s so much uncertainty around what’s happening so it’s really hard to make any decisions on where to go and what to do,” Kostecki told Speedcafe.com.

“At this stage I won’t be racing DVS [Super2], as I did for most of last year.

“I’m just trying to get something together where we can potentially race some wildcards for the year and then just see where we go from there.

“There’s a lot of exciting stuff happening away from racing as well but obviously racing is something I want to continue to do.”

Kostecki has been making a conscious effort to come to grips with various elements of the family business with a view to one day taking on a management role.

But he’s not quite going to the lengths of ex-Triple Eight Super2 team-mate Brenton Grove, who effectively retired from the Supercars pathway to fully focus on business.

“I still want to drive Supercars because I love to go racing,” said Kostecki.

“At the moment, my focus is sort of swaying towards the business just because there’s a bit more of a long-term future there but then still pick up any drives where I can.”

Kostecki added KBR could look to up its Supercars involvement when Gen3 regulations arrive next year.

His brother Jake and cousin Brodie will both race full-time in the 2021 Repco Supercars Championship, for Matt Stone Racing and Erebus Motorsport respectively.
