V8 Supercars Championship leader Jamie Whincup says he’s unsure of how a potential expansion to four cars next season will effect TeamVodafone.
Triple Eight Race Engineering director Roland Dane is currently in discussions with current customer Paul Morris Motorsport that could see a four-car ‘superteam’ created (CLICK HERE for Speedcafe.com’s earlier story).
Asked for his thoughts on having two additional team-mates next year, Whincup indicated that his personal preference was to maintain the status quo.
“How does it affect me? Greedy me says no,” said Whincup of expanding the team.
“When it was just Lowndesy and I, or Lowndesy and Steve Ellery (2005) with just two cars … we’re definitely going better now that we’ve got customers,” he continued. “More information is definitely a better thing.
“I haven’t worked out in my head if it would be a good decision to head that way (four cars), but at the end of the day it’s not my decision.
“I’ve got my car, I’ll do my thing, and I’m pretty sure no decision has been made yet.”
TeamVodafone team principal Adrian Burgess said that there is no reason why the team wouldn’t remain the series benchmark if it expanded to four cars.
“I don ‘t see why we can’t,” said Burgess of continuing the team’s success if an expansion was to take place.
“Four cars is clearly more work than two, but you don’t do it with the same amount of people, so part of the process would be building the right team … as a bigger version.”
TeamVodafone was the benchmark team in practice today, with Whincup fastest ahead of Fujitsu Racing’s Lee Holdsworth and Craig Lowndes. CLICK HERE for Speedcafe.com’s Practice 4 report.
The V8 Supercars will be on track tomorrow at 11.05am for qualifying before the top 10 shootout at 12.15pm.
