The Williams Formula 1 team has asked for a review of the penalty handed to Sergey Sirotkin following the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
Williams driver Sergey Sirotkin received a three-place grid penalty for the Spanish Grand Prix following a clash with Sergio Perez, but the team has questioned it in light of other penalties dished out over the course of the race.
Kevin Magnussen received a 10-second penalty, and two penalty points on his Super Licence, after tangling with Pierre Gasly, while neither Kimi Raikkonen nor Esteban Ocon were punished for their scrap on the opening lap.
Sirotkin, who also had two penalty points applied to his Super Licence, came a cropper with Nico Hulkenberg and Fernando Alonso in the run up to Turn 3 on the opening lap.
Having sustained heavy damage in the incident, Alonso dragged his McLaren back to pit lane with two punctures before finishing the race seventh, while Sirotkin was an immediate retirement.
The request for a review seeks to clear the Russian of the three-place grid drop and penalty points ahead of this weekend’s Spanish Grand Prix (May 11-13).

Williams can request a review of the penalty meted out, provided it can prove there is new evidence, or a ‘new element’ that wasn’t considered by stewards at the time.
“You are requested to appear before the Stewards to provide evidence in relation to the request,” the FIA confirmed to the team.
“There shall be a preliminary hearing to determine if a ‘new element’ as defined in Article 14.3 of the Code exists.
“This will be followed by another hearing to conduct the review(s), if any new element is determined by the stewards, to exist.
“It should be noted that the second hearing will occur only if such new element is determined in accordance with the Code, to exist.”
The initial review will take place by way of a teleconference, which includes the Azerbaijan stewards, on Tuesday morning UK time.
Should that prove successful, a secondary hearing will take place to consider the new evidence an hour later.
