Winterbottom wins last lap thriller at Albert Park

Winterbottom leads Van Gisbergen and Davison

Winterbottom leads Van Gisbergen and Davison

Mark Winterbottom has completed a perfect Friday performance by winning Race 2 of the MSS Security V8 Supercars Challenge at Albert Park.

The Orrcon Steel FPR Falcon driver took the lead from Shane van Gisbergen on the final lap when the Kiwi slid wide at Turn 5.

Van Gisbergen went on to finish second, 0.59s behind Winterbottom, and 3.11s ahead of Will Davison in the second FPR Falcon.

Davison led 11 of the 12 laps having been one of just six drivers to start on the soft tyre. Pitting at the end of the penultimate lap, the Trading Post Ford returned to the circuit in third position.

Garth Tander and Jamie Whincup rounded out the top five. The TeamVodafone driver took the lead from pole-sitter Winterbottom off the start, and headed 13 cars to the pitlane at the end of the opening lap. A slow stop however saw Whincup lose several positions, ultimately costing him any chance of the race win.

Whincup’s TeamVodafone team-mate Craig Lowndes also had a difficult race. Having started on the soft tyres, Lowndes ran second to Davison before pitting with a mechanical problem at the end of Lap 7.

Team Norton DJR Falcon driver James Moffat joined Lowndes on the retirements list three laps later when he was spun into the Turn 1 gravel trap by Jonathon Webb.

Tim Slade was also in the wars, spinning at the exit of Turn 3 amidst the opening lap shuffle. The Lucky 7 Falcon joined Jason Bright in undertaking the majority of the race on the hard tyres to eventually finish as the last of the runners in 26th.

The V8 Supercars will return to the Albert Park circuit for Race 3 at 1520 local time tomorrow.
