WORLD WRAP: Da Costa claims Macau GP win

da-costaMacau Grand Prix

Antonio Felix da Costa has claimed his second triumph in the prestigious Macau Grand Prix.

The FIA Formula E driver was forced to work hard for his victory adding to his win in the 2012 event on the narrow street circuit.

After starting from pole position, the Portuguese ace slipped to third as Red Bull junior Sette Camara used the slipstream to move into the lead before the Safety Car was deployed.

Da Costa mounted a charge on the restart following the stoppage caused by Nikita Mazepin.

The former DTM racer quickly passed Illot and was hot on the heels of Camara when the race was halted again after 10 laps following a crash for New Zealander Nick Cassidy.

With only three laps remaining after the second restart, Da Costa made his move at the Lisboa corner.

Once in front, Da Costa swept to the chequered flag ahead of a charging Felix Rosenqvist, who surged to second in the final laps.

Camara was left to settle for third ahead of Japan’s Kenta Yamaushita with Illot fifth.

Australian rising star Joey Mawson scored three podium finishes on his debut in the MRF Challenge series at Bahrain International Circuit.

The reigning German Formula 4 champion from Sydney quickly adapted to the Dallara single seater by claiming a front row slot in qualifying.

Mawson finished third in the opening race as Harrison Newey beat Ralf Aron to the victory.

The young Aussie went one place better in the second race but was unable to reel in his F4 title rival Mick Schumacher, who took the win from the reverse grid pole.

European F3 regular Aron claimed the spoils in the third race after overtaking Mawson, who led the early stages.

Mawson trailed Aron by 6.5s at the flag with Schumacher claiming the final spot on the podium.

Schumacher took out the final race while an off-track excursion dropped Mawson to sixth.

“It was a great experience, I feel that I learned a lot across the weekend,” said Mawson.

“At the start of the weekend we found out that we were using stick shifters instead of paddle shift, so that was very different. Not just for me but for everyone, we all had to adapt quickly.

“I managed to come away with three podiums out of four races, it would have been nice to have had a win but to be right up there and show some really good speed is very pleasing.

“It was great to have some good close racing and I’m looking forward to the next round.”

Countryman Dylan Young claimed four top 10 finishes with seventh his best result in the second heat.

Schumacher leads the series with Mawson third ahead of the next round at Dubai from December 8-10.
