WORLD WRAP: Piastri one round from Formula Renault title

Oscar Piastri leads the Formula Renault Eurocup

Formula Renault Eurocup

Two second place finishes in Hockenheim have seen Oscar Piastri marginally extend his title advantage in the Formula Renault Eurocup.

Holding a 12.5 point advantage heading into the weekend, the Australian will go into the final round with a 13.5 point advantage.

His advantage had slipped to just 5.5 points after the opening race in Hockenheim after rival Victor Martins (MP Motorsport) won, with Piastri (R-ace GP) second to the line.

The pair had started off the front row and held formation, Martins victorious by three seconds after 19 laps.

From fifth on the starting grid, Piastri moved to second over the course of Race 2’s 14-lap journey in sodden conditions.

The Australian trailed race winner Alexander Smolyar (R-ace GP) to the flag by just under seven seconds while Martins could do no better than fifth.

Yas Marina hosts the final round of the 2019 Formula Renault Eurocup, with its final two races to be played out over the October 24-26 weekend.

The start of the 6 Hours of Fuji

World Endurance Championship

Brendon Hartley secured his first World Endurance Championship win for Toyota with victory at Fuji at the head of a team one-two.

The two LMP1 Toyotas were the dominant force during the six-hour race, with Hartley’s car winning by more than half a minute over the sister car, which was hobbled by success ballast after winning at Silverstone in the season’s opening round.

Two laps down was the third placed Rebellion entry, with the leading LMP2 runner that of Racing Team Nederland in fourth overall.

Jota Sport had finished second in LMP2 class but were excluded post-race after failing scrutineering when the external neutral switch did not disengage the transmission.

Aston Martin claimed victory in LMGTE Pro while Matt Campbell was home in fifth in the LMGTE Am class.

The next round of the World Endurance Championship will be held in Shanghai, China, on November 8-10.

Albert Arenas (#75) and Lorenzo Dalla Porta (#48) fight for victory in Moto3

Moto2, Moto3

Luca Marini won the Thailand Moto2 grand prix but Alex Marquez marginally extended his championship lead to 40 points by finishing fifth.

Marquez (EG 0,0 Marc VDS Kalex) led out of the first corner but Marini (SKY Racing Team VR46 Kalex), who started fourth, took over first position on Lap 3 and never looked back.

Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM Ajo) and Iker Lecuona (American Racing KTM) rounded out the podium, and Augusto Fernandez (Flexbox HP40 Kalex) also passed Marquez along the way.

Fernandez is back in second in the championship after Jorge Navarro (Beta Tools Speed Up) finished outside the points in 17th.

Remy Gardner (ONEXOX TKKR SAG Team Kalex) ran as high as third but gradually slipped to 12th.

In Moto3, Albert Arenas (Gaviota Angel Nieto Team KTM) just beat Lorenzo Dalla Porta (Leopard Racing Honda) but the Italian is now 22 points up on Aron Canet (Sterilgarda Max Racing Team KTM), who went down due to a touch from Darryn Binder (CIP Green Power KTM).

The next round is in Japan on October 18-20.
