WORLD WRAP: Win for Lawson on Euroformula Open debut

Liam Lawson

Euroformula Open

Debutant New Zealander Liam Lawson won the first race of the Euroformula Open season after starting the race from third.

He led Yuki Tsunoda and Lukas Dunner to the flag while Jack Doohan finished his maiden event in the series in ninth place.

Fellow Australian Calan Williams came home 12th in the 21 car field, the fifth non-rookie home.

Lawson qualified on pole for Race 2 and went on to claim second but a penalty saw the Kiwi relegated to fourth.

The penalty was handed down following contact with team-mate Tsunoda at the start.

Marino Sato went on to win the race with Guilherme Samaia promoted to second and Dunner to third following Lawson’s penalty.

Doohan picked up another top 10, and Williams crossed the line to take 16th.

Pau hosts the next round of the Euroformula Open season on May 18-19.

British Formula 4

Bart Horsten won his first British Formula 4 race in the reverse grid affair at Donington Park.

The Australian saw off two Safety Cars and two red flags to take the win in the shortened race.

Horsten had earlier finished third in the opening race before falling to eighth in the final race of the weekend, with Louis Foster winning both of those encounters.

Jack Aitken

Formula 2

Jack Aitken and Nicholas Latifi claimed the two Formula 2 victories in Azerbaijan following chaotic races on both Saturday and Sunday.

Aitken won Saturday’s feature race, climbing from eighth on the grid.

Two Safety Car periods punctuated the event, with crashes at the first corner, and later when Guan Yu Zhou found the wall.

The podium was completed by Nyck de Vries and Jordan King.

The Sprint race went the way of Latifi in another Safety Car interrupted affair.

Tatiana Calderon triggered a three-car collision at Turn 2 on the opening lap to draw the Safety Car for the first time.

Luca Ghiotto then clipped Aitken before being joined in the fence by King and Nikita Mazepin.

Juan Manuel Correa was second and Feature Race winner Aitken third.

The Formula 2 championship heads to Spain for its next event from May 10-12.

Matt Campbell

Blancpain GT World Challenge America

Matt Campbell suffered technical issues that saw him fail to finish the opening Blancpain GT World Challenge America race at Virginia International Raceway.

The Australian Porsche junior and co-driver Anthony Imperato then came home eighth in Sunday’s race aboard their Wright Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 R.

Alvaro Parente and Andy Soucek won the first race in a Bentley Continental, their K-Pax Racing team-mates Rodrigo Baptista and Maxime Soulet winning Sunday’s race.

Canadian Tire Motorsports Park hosts rounds five and six of the series on May 17-19.

Robert Renauer, Thomas Preining

ADAC GT Masters

The Callaway Competition pairing of Markus Pommer and Marvin Kirchhofer won the opening race of the ADAC GT Masters season in Oschersleben.

They headed a trio of Audis to the line while Australian Aidan Read was fifth in the Schultz Motorsport Mercedes-AMG GT3 he shared with Marvin Dienst.

Robert Renauer and Thomas Preining claimed the weekend’s second race, with Read and Dienst coming home in 21st.

The next round of the campaign heads to Most in the Czech Republic on May 17-19.

Timmy Hansen

FIA World Rallycross Championship

Timmy Hansen could not be beaten in Round 2 of the FIA World Rallycross Championship at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.

Brothers Timmy and Kevin started the final from the front row and the former led all the way as he took the longer joker route on the final lap.

Andreas Bakkerud followed Timmy Hansen through the joker lap but rejoined behind both of the Team Hansen Peugeots and finished third.

Timmy Hansen had also topped all four qualifiers and now sits third in the championship, behind leader Kevin Hansen and Niclas Gronholm.

Round 3 will be held at Spa-Francorchamps on May 11-12.

FIA World Touring Car Cup

Nestor Girolami took two races wins and Gabriele Tarquini the third in the second event of the 2019 World TCR season at the Hungaroring.

Girolami scored pole for Race 1 and while he had to defend against Yvan Muller at the first corner, the Argentine held a small yet comfortable margin thereafter in his Honda.

He started sixth on a wet track in Race 2 but gained four positions in as many corners and had the lead before the end of the first lap, which he converted to a 2.5s victory.

Esteban Guerrieri (Honda) led the field away in Race 3 but lost power and handed the lead to Tarquini (Hyundai) on Lap 5.

Tarquini survived a restart, necessitated when Guerrieri later ended up in the wall, to lead home team-mate Norbert Michelisz by 0.7s.

Girolami finished sixth in Race 3 and takes the drivers’ championship lead to the next event at the Slovakia Ring on May 10-12.
