WORLD WRAP: Wittmann scoops DTM title

Marco Wittmann

Marco Wittmann

Marco Wittmann claimed his maiden DTM title with two races to spare at the Lausitzring in a meeting which also saw Pascal Wehrlein record a maiden victory in the series.

Wittmann, who has undoubtedly been the star driver of the season with four victories, was able to produce a measured drive safe in the knowledge a solid points finish would earn him the title.

In the end, the BMW driver came home in sixth place which was enough to secure the 2014 title with visits to Zandvoort and Hockenheim remaining.

While Wittmann celebrated his deserved championship success, Wehrlein dominated the race at Lausitzring as he converted his pole position into an healthy lead early on in wet conditions.

There proved to be no stopping the 19-year-old Mercedes driver as he went on to record his maiden victory from fellow Mercedes runner Christian Vietoris. Timo Scheider claimed the final place on the podium for Phoenix Audi.

Mercedes‘ strong showing continued with Daniel Juncadella coming home in fourth ahead the HWA Mercedes of Robert Wickens.

Formula Renault 3.5

Roberto Mehri

Roberto Mehri

Roberto Mehri and Norman Nato shared the spoils in the latest round of the Formula Renault 3.5 Championship at Hungary‘s Hungaroring.

Mehri, who made his Formula 1 grand prix weekend debut with Caterham at Monza last week, dominated the first race in tricky wet conditions.

The Zeta Corse driver quickly leapt from seventh on the grid to second in a highly impressive opening lap, before then becoming embroiled in battle with polesitter Oliver Rowland for the lead.

After several attacks, the Spaniard jumped into the lead when Rowland made a mistake and ran wide at the first corner.

Once in front, Mehri proved to be in a class of his own as he surged to the chequered flag by nearly half a minute.

Pierre Gasly came home in second having pipped Rowland to the position in the closing stages.

DAMS driver Nato denied Mehri from taking a double win as he managed to hold off numerous attacks from the race one winner on his way to victory.

In the end, Nato took the win by just four tenths of a second with Gasly third and Rowland fourth.

Mehri’s victory and second place has cut Carlos Sainz jr’s championship lead to 16 points.

The Spaniard finished fourth and sixth respectively in the two races.
