The Clipsal 500 Adelaide will open the V8 Supercars season until at least 2021 under the recently ratified terms of the event’s six-year contract extension.
The South Australian meeting lost its place as the year’s kick-off to the United Arab Emirates’ billion dollar Yas Marina facility in 2010 and 2011.
Despite V8 Supercars this morning underlining its plans to re-establish a portfolio of global events, CEO James Warburton confirmed that Adelaide’s position on the calendar is “locked in”.
“The deal is done. Until 2021 we are here for the first round, and so we should be,” he said.
“This is our single biggest event of the year in terms of attendance and an absolutely fantastic way to kick the year off.”
Confirmation that the agreement between the SA government and V8 Supercars to stage the Clipsal 500 has been extended by six-years through 2021 was made at the launch of last year’s event.
This year marks the debut of a twilight race format at the Clipsal 500 that has seen the traditional 250km Saturday encounter split into two 125km races.
