Alex Davison is in the running to make his Supercars return at this weekend’s Coates Hire Ipswich Super Sprint, Speedcafe.com has learned.

The Porsche Carrera Cup Australia driver appears the favourite to take over the #3 Lucas Dumbrell Motorsport Commodore, which was previously driven by Aaren Russell at the Watpac Townsville 400.

The Melbourne-based team is yet to confirm who will drive its second entry alongside Alex Rullo this weekend.

Russell secured a three event deal with the team earlier this month, which includes the Bathurst 1000 and the Coates Hire Newcastle 500 season finale, following the shock departure of LDM’s previous driver Cameron McConville.

Although keen to add to his schedule with the team, Speedcafe.com understands the Novocastrian will sit out this weekend.

Davison was among the contenders, including Dean Fiore, to drive for LDM at Townsville and should he secure the seat the former Supercars full-timer will make his first appearance in the category since 2015.

The 37-year-old contested the Pirtek Enduro Cup alongside younger brother Will Davison at Erebus Motorsport and was recalled for the final round of the season on the Sydney streets.

During his career the Gold Coast-based driver has made 156 Supercars race starts with his last full-time campaign in 2013, driving for Charlie Schwerkolt Racing.

Last weekend Davison was racing in the fifth round of the Porsche Carrera Cup Australia series at Sepang in Malaysia.

The #3 LDM Commodore has been piloted by four drivers already this season.

Taz Douglas was drafted in to contest rounds at Adelaide, the Australian Grand Prix, Symmons Plains and Winton, while Matthew Brabham filled in at Barbagallo Raceway in May.

McConville struck a two event deal from Darwin onwards before work commitments forced him to withdraw from Townsville, handing Russell an opportunity.
