Out-of-contract V8 Supercars driver Alex Davison says it would be “crazy” for his Ford Performance Racing-run team to make any major changes ahead of the new season.
The Victorian is one of a handful of current drivers yet to put pen to paper on a deal for 2014 ahead the championship’s final round at Sydney next weekend.
Davison returned to a full-time V8 Supercar seat this year with the Charlie Schwerkolt-owned FPR entry.
The season has largely been a tough slog for the 34-year-old, scoring just eight top 10s in the 31 races run prior to the weekend.
A first podium of the season at Phillip Island however has Davison up to 13th in the standings and optimistic of ending the year on a high note at Sydney Olympic Park.
While Davison is adamant he deserves a place on the gird in 2014, his future largely hangs on the plans of Schwerkolt.
It is expected that Schwerkolt will stay at FPR for a second season, but which driver will fill the seat is far from certain.
The former Dick Johnson Racing co-owner has made it clear that his entry must deliver stronger results next season.
“Absolutely I feel I should be on the grid next year,” Davison told Speedcafe.com when asked of his future.
“It’s my first year back after a year out which has been more significant than I thought. I think anyone who can get podiums and string results deserves to be on the grid.
“There is stuff going on and I don’t know what Charlie (Schwerkolt) is doing… but in my opinion it would be crazy to change as we have a great team here at FPR.
“It makes logical sense for everybody, for me, the sponsors and for Charlie to continue things on, but thats not my decision to make.
“We have a year behind us and although it could have been better, there are a lot of guys behind us in the championship, who have had worse years.
“Nobody has crap equipment or crap teams these days and the pitlane operates at a high level. Everyone has equipment that is capable of winning the race.
“Some of our results haven’t been good but we are not 28th in the championship, we are 13th and that is still reasonably respectable.
“As a group and myself there is room for improvement and we need to be able to perform week in and week out. We need to prove that over a season and not short periods.”
Options outside of the Schwerkolt seat appear limited for Davison, whose V8 Supercars career has included two gap years in the Carrera Cup Australia.
