Australia Post has released a range of four collectable stamps in the lead up to this year’s Bathurst 1000.
The event, which celebrates 50 years of touring car racing at Mount Panorama, will see Peter Brock’s 1979 Torana A9X, Russell Ingall’s Supercheap Auto Commodore, Will Davison’s Trading Post Falcon and the Bathurst circuit depicted in the limited edition stamps.
The Australia Post stamps will be available for 60 cents from October 2.
The use of Brock’s famous 05 Torana has caused a minor stir, however, with the image featuring Marlboro branding.
With Tobacco advertising outlawed in Australia, the image has raised questions, however Australia Post says that the collection had to be authentic.
“We felt that that was very much a recognisable part of him at the time, and of the car,” Australia Post design manager Lynette Traynor told The Age.
“We felt to remove it, would not be faithful or authentic. With the graphic effects and the cropping we have lessened it slightly.
“If we were to remove it, we would effectively be playing with history.”
