Baily extends Sports Sedan lead with Phillip Island win

Kerry Baily's Aston Martin has won five of its first six races

Kerry Baily has extended his lead in the 2012 Kerrick Sports Sedan National Series by taking two races and the round at Phillip Island.

Baily led home Tony Ricciardello in the opening two heats, before Darren Hossack trumped all comers in the final.

The opening race result was not without its controversy, with the timing screens showing that the Baily snuck past Ricciardello by 0.01s at the line, despite the Alfa appearing to have kept its nose in front.

Officials later deemed that the discrepancy was due to the different locations of the timing transponders in the two cars, before deciding to leave the original result to stand.

Baily’s winning margin was a more comfortable 3.3s in Race 2 as engine problems hampered Ricciardello’s progress.

The Alfa driver eventually limped home eighth in Race 3 as the problems worsened. The West Australian ended the weekend third overall, while his team was handed the Kerrick Award for its efforts repairing the car following its fire at Mallala’s season opener.

Race 3 was all about Hossack, whose day had begun with a broken axle-induced DNF in Race 1.

Hossack charged from the back of the grid to fourth on the opening lap of Race 2, before a clash while trying to take third from Shane Bradford over Lukey Heights dropped the Audi to the tail once more.

The former series champion eventually recovered to finish fifth, undercutting his own previous lap record by almost a second in the process.

It took two corners for Hossack to take the lead in Race 3, which he eventually won by a full 20s.

A fourth and two thirds saw Bradford as the top Trans Am runner in second for the round.

Trans Am pace-setter Des Wall’s weekend yielded third and fourth positions in Races 1 and 3 respectively, but a spin in Race 2 kept the veteran from the weekend podium.

The 2012 Kerrick Sports Sedan National Series continues with the Shannons Nationals presented by Hi-Tec Oils at Eastern Creek on July 13-15.
