Jordan Boys has topped Practice 2 in the Dunlop Super2 Series at Mount Panorama thanks to a qualifying simulation completed just before a Declan Fraser crash.
Fraser put his #777 MW Motorsport Nissan Altima in the wall at The Dipper inside the final three minutes of what was to have been a 40-minute session, bringing an early end to proceedings.
Ironically, that solidified Boys’ position at the top of the timesheet after he found the barriers at The Chase in Practice 1.
The Image Racing driver, who qualified on the front row at the same circuit last time out, had just clocked a 2:08.1045s as the ‘happy hour’ began.
Boys was personal best to the first sector when the red flag was called, but long-time fast man Broc Feeney had just set the very fastest split to Reid Park in the #888 Triple Eight Race Engineering VF Commodore.
With no chance to complete a green tyre lap, however, Feeney remained second at well over a second adrift of the #49 VF Commodore.
Practice 1 fast man Jayden Ojeda (#31 MWM Nissan Altima) ended up third while the other Image Racing entry, the #999 VF Commodore of Jaylyn Robotham, was fourth after the Super2 rookie also appeared to get in a qualifying simulation.
Zak Best (#78 Tickford Racing FGX Falcon), who ended up fifth, was fastest after the first flyers with a 2:10.7565s before Feeney took over with a 2:09.9892s.
The new Triple Eight pilot improved marginally on his third flyer to a 2:09.8373s and that was still quickest at the end of the first runs, ahead of Best’s 2:10.0822s.
Boys was a slightly late starter to the session after repairs during the day to his #49 VF Commodore but soon made his way to third with a 2:10.3758s.
The Albury driver’s place on the timing screen was taken by Matt McLean when the new Eggleston Motorsport driver clocked a 2:10.1496s in the 17th minute of the session.
It was not long, however, before McLean was back in pit lane after Car #54 spat its right-front wheel off as he exited The Chase.
Feeney lowered the fastest lap time to a 2:09.8356s at the start of his second run, then to a 2:09.4958s two laps later, before Ojeda jumped to second with a 2:09.7171s.
McLean got back out on track after his wheel issue but found no improvement and ended up sixth, ahead of Matt Chahda (#18 Matt Chahda Motorsport FGX Falcon), Tyler Everingham (#27 MWM Nissan Altima), Zane Morse (#11 Zane Morse Racing VF Commodore), and Josh Fife (#28 MWM Nissan Altima).
Fraser was left 11th, from Angelo Mouzouris (#10 Triple Eight VF Commodore) and Super3 class pace-setter Jon McCorkindale (#69 Mac Motorsport FG Falcon).
Qualifying for the first race of the season starts tomorrow at 08:30 local time/AEDT.
