Brown hails successful Super2 introduction

Will Brown

Will Brown says he has exceeded personal expectations so far following an impressive start to his rookie season in the Dunlop Super2 Series.

Brown bagged a maiden podium in Race 1 at Symmons Plains after finishing inside the top 10 in all three races during his debut weekend at Adelaide.

While his Tasmania weekend turned sour due to a set-up gamble in changeable conditions in Race 3 and then being caught up in a Garry Jacobson/Kurt Kostecki incident in Race 4, the Queenslander still sits fourth in the series after two rounds.

Brown entered the series with the highly-credentialed Eggleston Motorsport operation off the back of a title-winning season in the CAMS Jayco Australian Formula 4 Championship and Toyota 86 Racing Series, but did not expect such early success.

“It’s been pretty good so far,” Brown told Speedcafe.com.

“It’s obviously challenging (because) the cars are a lot different to what I expected and a lot different to what I’ve driven, but it’s going good.

“At the start of the year we were hoping to get a couple of top 10 finishes in the rounds so we’ve exceeded that.

“The first one we finished sixth in the round at Clipsal and sixth again on the weekend with a couple of hard races at the end but we’re really happy with how we’re going now.

“We probably just need to keep concentrating and try and keep doing what we’re doing.”

Brown explained that his greatest driving challenge in transitioning from F4, Formula Ford and Toyota 86 has been dealing with the power at his disposal in the #38 Commodore.

“I did a lot of categories last year to try and build up the experience to try and step into a category like this,” he explained.

“Doing that it taught me about a lot, but you’ve got to stop these cars and get them located a lot more and just wait a lot longer.

“They’ve obviously got so much horsepower but on exit you just have to feed the throttle on so you don’t break into wheelspin or anything like that.

“That’s probably been the biggest thing, just feeding the throttle on and just getting used to the power.”

The 18-year-old also paid tribute to his Eggleston team, which fields a trio of ex-Triple Eight VF Commodores.

The team won the second-tier Supercars title with Paul Dumbrell in 2014, and Brown is able to lean on the knowledge of the Supercars veteran who currently leads the series.

“Going to Eggleston Motorsport has probably been our best move,” he declared.

“They’re giving us all the resources, we’ve got Triple Eight cars which haven’t let us down at all, and they have Paul Dumbrell there.

“I’ve got all the experience around me and all the hard work that people are doing to finish where we are, so it’s basically just about me putting it together.”

Round 3 of the Dunlop Super2 Series supports this weekend’s WD-40 Phillip Island 500, April 21-23.
