V8 Utes driver and charity crusader Cam Wilson has obliterated the world record for covering the most distance in a go-kart over a 24 Hour period indoors.
Wilson surpassed the record of 503km with almost four hours remaining of the challenge at his indoor karting facility in the Brisbane suburb of Eagle Farm in a bid to raise money and awareness for Huntington’s Queensland.
He covered a total distance of 604km behind the wheel of the go-kart on a shortened but nevertheless challenging 170m long circuit.
The record was ratified by a team of 30 volunteer time keepers and marshals.
“I’m probably not the fittest bloke around. It was a lot of mind over matter. I can say that my body literally stopped at 5am,” Wilson told Speedcafe.com following the challenge which finished at noon.
Wilson fought considerable physical and mental challenges throughout the record-breaking drive following his horrific accident in a V8 Utes race at the Gold Coast 600 meeting in October last year.
The accident at the beach chicane left him with lower back pain and he had been shortened in height on his right side by ‘an inch’.
“I was disappointed I had to cancel the original date of the challenge in November last year because of my crash.
“So I rescheduled to February 4-5 probably a little but prematurely, thinking I would be right.
“(I thought) that’s three months down the track I will be right by then.
“It was only a month ago that I still wasn’t right. The aftermath of the Gold Coast accident left me with lower back pains.”
Wilson was ready to surrender the attempt at 5am, physically spent from the rigours of the challenge which he split into 2.5 hour stints.
“It was only because of my good chiropractor who was able to get me to move again.”
The charity push is expected to raise up to $50,000 for Huntington’s Queensland.
