Cameron Waters is set to be confirmed as Grant Denyer’s replacement in the #23 Shannons Supercar Showdown entry at next week’s Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000.
After making his debut in the Great Race last year as the winner of the reality television program, Waters is poised to be announced as the replacement for Denyer, who continues to recover from a long-term shoulder injury.
The decision to use Waters, 18, in the Shannons-backed entry has come amid confirmation that the Kelly Racing-run Dunlop Series team Dreamtime Racing has withdrawn from the Bathurst round.
The future of Dreamtime Racing is in the balance after it received news that foundation sponsor the Mildura Aboriginal Cooperative’ has, according to a team statement, “unilaterally reversed its earlier commitment to the team.”
It is unclear whether the two-car Dreamtime team will continue in the Dunlop Series after the Bathurst event.
Kelly Racing chairman John Crennan stated that a change in management at MAC saw the new operators unwilling to continue its pledged sponsorship of Dreamtime Racing.
Crennan says that the MAC’s withdrawal has seen several other sponsor opportunities based around the Dreamtime concept disapear.
Water’s co-driver for the Bathurst 1000 will be finalised this Sunday at 1pm AEST on 7mate. Three drivers remain in with a chance of scoring the drive – Jesse Dixon, Andre Heimgartner and Glen Wood.
