Yuey Tan earned Carrera Cup Asia the bragging rights in the Pro-Am/TAG Heuer Challenge combined Carrera Cup Asia/Australia race at Malaysia’s Sepang International Circuit.
The Singapore born driver made the most of his front row start to leap into the lead that he held throughout the 13 lap race, which was punctuated by a brief Safety Car period.
Tan, who enjoyed a period of his career in Australia, held his nerve after the restart to record a comfortable win from Asia rival Evan Chen, while Tim Miles was the top Carrera Cup Australia competitor in third.
Carrera Cup Australia secured the pole and its was the pole-sitter Dean Cook who led the field on the run to Turn 1.
A strong start from Carrera Cup Asia’s Tan saw him shoot to the lead with a slick pass at Turn 4 while Tim Miles shot from fifth to second.
Australia’s Stephen Grove moved up to third after passing Cook, who also fell into the clutches of Chen.
The race was neutralised on lap 6 when Michael S found the gravel at the final corner.
Chen’s charge continued when racing resumed as he quickly latched onto the rear wing of Grove in the battle for third.
Grove was forced to defend hard but was unable to deny Chen from sweeping into third at Turn 1 on lap 8.
While Tan quickly re-established a comfortable lead at the front after the restart, Chen caught and passed Miles for second with another slick pass at Turn 1.
In the end, Tan went on to take the win from Asia Pro-Am rival Chen, while Miles settled for third.
