The Celebrity Challenge will return to the Qantas Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix support bill in 2011 after a two-year hiatus.
A field of 27 Lexus CT 200hs will take to the Albert Park circuit in what the Japanese luxury car company claims is the first hybrid-only race ever held.
The concept was officially launched this morning in the Albert Park pitlane, with star of the Nine Network’s Getaway program Kelly Landry on hand with an example of the soon-to-be-launched CT 200h hybrid hatchback.
While a full list of drivers has not yet been released, singer-song writer Brian McFadden, former Olympic swimmer Giaan Rooney, journalist Kate Waterhouse and former Rugby League player have been confirmed to join Landry on the grid.
The field will be made up of 12 male celebrities, 12 female celebrities and three competition winners.
Lexus Australia’s Corporate Manager, Peter Evans, said that the Australian Grand Prix event offered Lexus the perfect opportunity to launch its new hybrid model.
“The Celebrity Challenge gives Lexus the ability to demonstrate that hybrids can be fun to drive – while still being environmentally conscious,” said Evans.
“Lexus is excited about showing off the environmental credentials of the CT 200h by taking advantage of its innovative hybrid driveline in this exciting racing format.
“Lexus is pleased to be able to bring the Celebrity Challenge back to the program for the Australian Grand Prix,” said Mr Evans.
Acting CEO of the Australian Grand Prix Corporation Andrew Westacott said his organisation was very happy to welcome the Celebrity Challenge back to Albert Park with the support of Lexus.
“The Celebrity Challenge adds even more fun and glamour to an already action-packed schedule at the 2011 Formula 1™ Qantas Australian Grand Prix this March,” he said.
The race will feature two winners, with the outright winner and the driver who uses the least amount of fuel during the race officially recognised.
The 2011 Formula 1 Qantas Australian Grand Prix will run from 24-27 March.
