The DJR Team Penske Mustangs of Scott McLaughlin and Fabian Coulthard will run with silver ferns on their mirrors in tribute to the victims of the Christchurch mosque shootings.
McLaughlin’s Shell Ford normally runs with white mirrors and Coulthard’s with yellow, but they have been made black today.
Both will also carry silver ferns on their helmets.
McLaughlin, a native of Christchurch, dedicated his win in Race 3 of the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship at Albert Park to the city and the victims.
Coulthard, born in Britain but raised in New Zealand from an early age, also said that his result was for the people of New Zealand.
“That was special to stand on the podium with Scott and hear the NZ National anthem play,” he said.
“It’s been a dark day for our country today, and we raced today (Friday) in their honour.
“Our thoughts are with everyone in Christchurch. This result is for them.”
McLaughlin and Coulthard are two of five New Zealand drivers in the field, while there are a myriad working in teams, administration, and the broadcast.
Supercars CEO Sean Seamer, himself one of the Kiwi contingent, expressed his sympathies on behalf of the championship in a statement issued a short time ago.
“To our friends, family and fans in Christchurch and New Zealand,” it began.
“The Supercars family is deeply saddened by yesterday’s horrific events in Christchurch.
“Many New Zealanders take part in and contribute to our sport; and in many ways it feels inappropriate to be here in Melbourne doing something we enjoy while there is so much pain in Christchurch.
“We can only hope, humbly, the Supercars activity this weekend can provide some brief respite and a distraction from what is otherwise a very sombre time for our New Zealand brethren.
“Our heartfelt condolences are with all of those affected.”
Race 4 of the season starts at 1250 local time/AEDT.
Today we race in memory of all those lost in #Christchurch yesterday. Both cars will display the Silver Fern on the mirrors for the rest of the weekend, alongside @FabianCoulthard & @smclaughlin93‘s helmets. #VASC pic.twitter.com/QZWf3rZxJL
