Murphy has been sidelined for three months due to an ongoing back complaint. He was operated on today with a planned return around the Sandown 500 in September.
He says he'll be doing his best in his second championship drive this year.
“I've got a job to do for the Pepsi Max Crew and will grab this second opportunity with both hands,” Russell said.
“The Pepsi Max Crew have a huge activation underway in Darwin and I'll be doing my absolute best to put the #51 as far up the grid as possible.”
It is expected that Russell's drive in the Pepsi Commodore is a one-off, with other drivers likely to take the seat in coming events.
The Skycity Triple Crown kicks off this Friday.
