Will Davison has emerged as the favourite to land the seat at the newly launched 23Red Racing team, which takes over from Lucas Dumbrell Motorsport next season.
The Tekno Autosports driver had admitted that this weekend’s Coates Hire Newcastle 500 could be his last full-time Supercars start with the round his last for the Gold Coast operation.
However, Speedcafe.com understands the two-time Bathurst 1000 winner is set to pilot the one-car 23Red Racing team which will run a solitary Prodrive built Ford Falcon FGX.
The team had evaluated several candidates for the seats, believed to be Garry Jacobson and Jack Le Brocq, but it appears Davison is closing in on the drive.
23Red Racing had hoped to announced their new recruit on Monday but it is now working towards a December 1 date for its official unveil.
Davison would bring a wealth of experience to the Melbourne team having driven for Team Dynamik, Dick Johnson Racing, Holden Racing Team, Ford Performance Racing, Erebus Motorsport and Tekno Autosports since making his Supercars debut in 2004.
The 35-year-old has scored 19 race wins including Bathurst 1000 triumphs in 2009 and 2016.
Meanwhile, Tekno Autosports is believed to be moving closer to securing a new title sponsor and driver for its ZB Commodore next season.
Le Brocq has been linked with a switch to Tekno with a possible move to take over from the retiring Todd Kelly at Nissan Motorsport, thought to be unlikely.
Former Holden Racing Team boss Adrian Burgess is with the Gold Coast squad at Newcastle this weekend as he evaluates the possibility of joining the squad in a role next year.
