John Bowe will officially return to Dick Johnson Racing this year in a driver coaching and mentoring role.
The veteran, who currently competes in the Touring Car Masters, will work with new DJR recruits Scott Pye and David Wall throughout the season.
Bowe drove for DJR between 1988 and 1998, winning two Bathurst 1000s and one Australian Touring Car Championship title with the team.
He has been a strong supporter of DJR during its tumultuous recent years and shares a mutual sponsor in Wilson Security.
“I am excited to be taking an active role with Dick and Wilson Security Racing this year,” said Bowe.
“Dick’s team deserves the support they are now getting. I’ve always admired Dick’s ‘never say die’ attitude particularly last year and he’s now got the right people and a great sponsor to guide the team to the success it deserves.
“My role will be on and off track and I will work with Dick on really bringing Scott and David and the co-drivers on.
“I am very pleased to be back with my ‘family’ V8 Supercar team. Having Wilson Security commit to the team for two years just highlights the potential we have here.”
Added Johnson: “JB is a great mate of mine and really is like family.
“We have been through so much together over the years and had some great wins at Sandown and Bathurst together not to mention the championships.
“Having him back in the fold thanks to Wilson Security is a real coup for us.
“He has mentored a lot of young drivers over the years and what he does in ‘Mustang Sally’ on race weekends (in the TCM) shows these young blokes he’s still got what it takes.”
Bowe last competed in V8 Supercars during 2007, when he drove for Paul Cruickshank Racing.
Bowe’s next race meeting will be February’s Bathurst 12 Hour, where he will race a Maranello Motorsport Ferrari alongside Mika Salo, Craig Lowndes and car owner Peter Edwards.
