Surgeons have successfully performed delicate reconstructive surgery on Matt Mingay following his terrifying crash in the second Stadium Super Trucks race in Detroit.
The Australian action athlete and well known stuntman suffered horrific facial injuries after the roof of his truck peeled off when it flipped in the early laps of the race.
Mingay’s jaw and chin were reported to be the major areas of concern while he also lost the entire bottom row of his teeth.
Doctors have indicated that Mingay could remain in Detroit Receiving Hospital for up to three weeks before there is any decision on moving the Gold Coast star.
“The operation went really well. They did an awesome job of putting him back together,” Paul Morris, who also competed in the Detroit Stadium Trucks event, told Speedcafe.com.
“I spoke to the doctor who said it would be two or three weeks before they would consider any move.”
The Penske organisation, who manage the Belle Isle IndyCar race which saw the Super Trucks on the support bill, came in for high praise for their crisis management plan in the aftermath of the accident.
“Penske were unbelievable in how they handled it and the doctors have done an awesome job,” Morris continued.
“Penske had everything in place and the best of medical help was on hand right away. It was incredible to watch how they handled the situation.
“Matt has lost all his bottom teeth so there is a bit of a rebuilding process in getting him back to normal.
“Considering what he’s been through, we are all pretty relieved.
“Matt’s wife Sheena is in good spirits. Penske has had a person with her the whole time helping her out with all the things you would normally have to deal with in a situation like this.”
