The V8 Supercars drivers are expecting to face a wet and wild weekend of racing at the Plus Fitness Phillip Island 400.
Forecasts show a 90 percent chance of rain on the Island today, including the chance of a thunderstorm in the late afternoon.
The high-speed nature of the Victorian venue makes it particularly treacherous in heavily wet conditions, with aquaplaning on puddles and limited visibility significant concerns.
Friday pace-setter Craig Lowndes won at Phillip Island in 2003 when the weekend’s single 300km race had to be red flagged due to a downpour.
The now 40-year-old veteran is one of many hoping that only light rain falls across the two remaining days of track action.
“We’ve been here a number of times when it’s only drizzling rain and it’s been quite good,” said Lowndes of tackling the 4.45km venue in wet conditions.
“But we’ve also had near-monsoon type conditions, like when Bargs (Jason Bargwanna) gyrated down the main straight aquaplaning (in 1999).
“It’s a circuit where you’ve got to be very committed in the dry because it’s fast and flowing and it’s really the same in the wet in order to get a lap time.
“Really it’ll be down to how much rain we get. In the past if we’ve had too much rain they’ve put out the Safety Car and circulated until it was safe enough to race.”
Wet weather would put an extra variable into team-mate Jamie Whincup’s quest to secure his sixth V8 Supercars title today.
Barring any future points penalties, Whincup will wrap up the title if he ends today’s two races with a 450 point margin over the field.
He currently sits 402 ahead of Mark Winterbottom, while Shane van Gisbergen (478 points down) and Craig Lowndes (504 points down) are also still within mathematical contention.
“The track conditions, no matter what it does, are the same for everyone,” said Whincup.
“We’ll just tune the car up and go out there and do what we do best. We’ll race hard no matter what conditions are thrown at us.”
Below is the points allocation for each of today’s two 100km races.
