Erebus Motorsport has teased one of several livery options under consideration for Supercars’ retro round at Sandown in September.
The Melbourne-based squad is the first team to publicly commit its support to the initiative, which is being introduced by Supercars this year to add further attention to the Bathurst warm-up event.
Although Erebus only has a short history, its interest in the retro concept is being driven by primary sponsor Penrite, which is this year celebrating its 90th anniversary.
A digital rendering posted on the team’s social media channels shows its #9 Holden sporting the yellow and red colours raced by Melbourne socialite Peter Janson in the 1970s and 80s.
Janson took three podium finishes in the Bathurst 1000 alongside Larry Perkins between 1977 and 1980 and gained a cult following for his flamboyant character.
Although the Janson tribute is not expected to be raced, Erebus general manager Barry Ryan told Speedcafe.com that the team will run a retro scheme at Sandown.
“Penrite have pretty much got what they want to do, but there are a couple of options and this is obviously one of them,” Ryan told Speedcafe.com.
“We’ve put it out there to see the reaction and it has gone nuts on our social media with a lot of positive responses.
“The retro concept works well for Penrite and I imagine a few other teams will get onboard as well.
“It’s an expensive thing to do if you go the whole way with uniforms and everything, but we’ve already got a head start on that from Penrite’s 90th anniversary promotion.”
The Sandown 500 will take place on September 16-18, proceeding a Bathurst 1000 that will commemorate 10 years since the death of nine-time winner Peter Brock.
