Mitch Evans scored his first GP2 Series victory of the season following a dramatic final lap pass on Arthur Pic in the sprint race at Monza.

After a strong start from sixth the Kiwi pursued polesitter Pic for much of the race after finding a way by fellow New Zealander Richie Stanaway in the early laps.

Evans quickly caught Pic with championship leader Stoffel Vandoorne in hot pursuit of the pair after dispatching Stanaway.

The top three pulled away from the chasing pack but the gap between Pic and Evans remained constant until the penultimate lap.

As the race entered the final lap Evans made the most of the DRS to lunge down the inside of Pic at the first chicane.

Pic tried to respond but the Auckland ace managed to hold onto the position to score a memorable victory from the Campos Racing driver, Vandoorne and Stanaway.

Evans’ third career GP2 victory arrives just 24 hours after producing a stunning drive from the rear of the grid to finish third in Saturday’s feature race.

The New Zealander was forced to start from the back of the grid after being excluded from a second place start slot for a tyre pressure infringement.

Alexander Rossi claimed his second win of the season on Saturday after coming through a thrilling dice with Vandoorne.

Two podium finishes for Vandoorne has seen the McLaren protege open up 108 point lead over Rossi in the championship standings with Russia’s Sergey Sirotkin a distant third.

The GP2 Series continues with a visit to Russia’s Sochi Autodrom from October 10-11.
