Toyota has shown off the redesigned Camry that will be campaigned by its three teams in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series this season.
Unveiled at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the race car was set next to the 2018 road going Camry.
While the road car will not go on sale until later this year, the race car will be used from the start of the season which traditionally opens with the Daytona 500 next month.
Toyota, represented by Joe Gibbs Racing, Furniture Row Racing and BK Racing in the Cup Series, finished first through third at Daytona last year headed by Denny Hamlin.
The 2016 season saw Toyotas win 16 races, the company's most fertile year in NASCAR since it first entered the top tier 10 years ago.
Hamlin said there is a lot of anticipation within the Gibbs operation about the new model.
“A lot of hard work has been put into it to make these cars perform well on the street and the race track,” Hamlin said.
“I have no doubt that we've done our homework in the off-season and we'll have Camrys that we can race with (on the track).”
Toyota's NASCAR teams were involved in the design process much earlier than in previous attempts according to Dave Wilson, the TRD president and general manager.
“Largely the first two shots at this (in 2013 and 2015) Toyota, TRD (and) Calty (Design Research) ultimately were responsible for the design and the initial performance,” Wilson said.
“Then in the process you hand it to our team partners and they develop it further.
“This go round we involved our team partners much earlier in the process and had them work with us side-by-side as we're designing this because again, they've got very, very smart aerodynamicists.”
While Toyota's future is sorted the same cannot be said for General Motors with the Australian sourced SS in its final year.
The Chevrolet-badged Commodore has run in the Cup series since 2013 with the manufacturer saying it is not ready to make an announcement on a successor for 2018.
The most likely replacements rest with derivatives of the Impala or Malibu which sold 97,006 and 227,881 in 2016 compared with 3013 SS examples.
NASCAR action begins with the non-points Clash event at Daytona on February 18 with the signature Daytona 500 scheduled for February 26.
