Mark Griffith will pilot a Ginetta G55 GT4 in the opening round of the CAMS Australian GT Championship at the Formula 1 Rolex Australian Grand Prix.

The entry marks a return to Ginetta for Griffith, who won the 2013 and 2014 Australian GT Sports class titles in a G50 GT4.

The gentleman racer had campaigned a Mercedes-AMG GT3 for the past two seasons.

“We said a while ago that we’d go GT4 racing because it’s a class designed for gentleman drivers,” said Griffith.

“GT4 cars are cheaper than GT3, and that makes it much easier to go racing.

“I think GT4 is going to be a great thing, and we’re doing everything we can to help get cars on the grid.”

While the G50 GT4 has been run in both the Australian GT Championship and Australian GT Trophy Series, this month’s Albert Park round represents the first appearance of the G55 GT4 in Australian GT racing.

The G55, which weighs less than 1100kg and is powered by a 3.7-litre V6 engine producing 380bhp, has won the last two British GT4 class titles.

The announcement comes a day after news that Jeremy Gray is entering an Aston Martin Vantage GT4 in this year’s Australian GT Championship, which features a dedicated GT4 class for the first time.

Australian GT will have four races at the Australian Grand Prix, from March 22-25.
