Daniel De Jong has been diagnosed with a fractured vertebra following a horrific crash during Saturday's GP2 Series feature race at Spa-Francorchamps.
The MP Motorsport driver was airlifted to hospital in nearby Liege where he has since undergone surgery on a broken sixth vertebrae, which required immediate attention.
De Jong, who is in a stable condition, sustained the injury when contact with Pierre Gasly fired the 23-year-old Dutchman deep into the barriers at the high speed Blanchimont corner.
Stewards added 10 seconds to Gasly's race time for his role in the incident.
“After MP Motorsport's Daniël De Jong was taken to Liège hospital yesterday following his accident during the feature race, it was found that the Dutch driver had one broken vertebrae (the sixth) which needed immediate attention,” read a statement from the GP2 Series.
“The four hour surgery went well and his situation is stable.”
De Jong is expected to remain in hospital next week as his recovery continues.
