Heimgartner keeps Carrera Cup title hopes alive

Andre Heimgartner’s win means the final race will decide the champion

Andre Heimgartner has kept the Carrera Cup championship alive after taking victory in the second race of the weekend on the streets of the Gold Coast.

Heimgartner’s victory in the long 28-lap race was in contrast to a a fifth place finish for points leader David Wall; meaning the championship will go down to the final race of the weekend and of the season at 1:05pm.

Starting from second on the grid Heimgartner got the jump on Race #1 winner Jaxon Evans, and quickly controlled things out front.

The duo pulled away from David Wall in third, while a queue of cars started a race-long battle for fourth.

Cameron McConville held the position for a most of race, but a succession of kerb hop infringements was not his only issue, with Michael Almond forcing his way through.

The key moment for Wall came just two laps from the finish when he got caught in traffic. He could not get by Sam Shahin, and that allowed first Almond and then Alex Davison the chance to get by.

Heimgartner took the race win by just under seven seconds from Evans, while Davison pipped Almond on the line for third place. That proved critical in the Carrera Cup Endurance Cup with Davison winning that trophy on a count-back from Wall.

There was plenty of action in the Tag Heuer Carrera Challenge with points leader Stephen Grove and Max Twigg coming together on the opening lap.

They failed to finish with Dean Cook taking the semi-professional category from Marc Cini and Shahin, Cini winning the Endurance Cup for the challenge drivers.
