Ryan Hunter-Reay has made the perfect start to the defence of his 2013 win at Barber Motorsports Park, Alabama.
Hunter-Reay goes into qualifying by topping both practice sessions for the Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama, finishing with a 1:08.7836s best.
The Andretti Autosport driver managed to edge out Sebastien Bourdais (KV Chevy) who recorded 1:08.9331s.
On combined practice times Josef Newgarden was third fastest with championship leader Will Power (Penske) fourth best as he tries to add to his wins at the road course in 2011 and 2012.
“It is quite a bit hotter than we’re used to here at Barber,” Hunter-Reay said.
“It takes some getting used to and the track conditions have certainly changed, but we’ve tested here quite a bit – we tested here in the offseason and we definitely can’t get enough of Barber.
“ The Andretti Autosport car is great right now, we’re not where we want to be yet, but I expect to see all four of us up front.”
Meanwhile in Indy Lights qualifying Zach Veach has scored pole for Andretti Autosport with team-mate Matthew Brabham sixth fastest after admitting he missed the chance to get his fast lap in.
“I’m just disappointed in myself. I think I should be higher than I qualified and (I’m) disappointed with that,” Brabham said.
