Lawson switches to Euroformula after FEM demise

Liam Lawson will now race in Euroformula Open in addition to the FIA Formula 3 Championship, after the cancellation of the inaugural season of Formula European Masters (FEM).

The talented New Zealander was to have run in both international F3 and one of the series which it replaced, with FEM a continuation of the old FIA Formula 3 European Championship.

After FEM was called off due to a shortage of entries, Motopark, the team which Lawson was to have contested FEM with, has moved its cars to Euroformula Open.

The Red Bull junior is excited to be able to still race an older-specification F3 car in Euroformula Open alongside the latest version in the FIA F3 Championship.

“I’m really happy we’re still getting to race in the older F3 cars as well, I can’t wait,” said Lawson.

“I haven’t tested the Motopark car yet but from the testing I did last year in these cars it’s going to be exciting to finally race in one.

“I’m really impressed with the work the team has done to get us ready even though we won’t get any seat time before the first round.”

There is no word yet on which way Lawson will go on the two clash weekends, the first when FIA F3 at Silverstone coincides with Euroformula Open at the Red Bull Ring (July 12-14), and the second when FIA F3 at Monza is on the same weekend as Euroformula Open at Silverstone (September 6-9).

Australian Calan Williams, who had also committed to FEM, will return to Euroformula Open with Fortec Motorsport after racing in the series last year.

Compatriot Jack Doohan will race in both Euroformula Open and the F3 Asian Championship in his first year of F3 competition.

Lawson will next be in action when he tests in FIA F3 at Catalunya on April 9-10.
