McLaughlin sets early Phillip Island pace

Scott McLaughlin

Scott McLaughlin’s Fujitsu Holden

Scott McLaughlin ended his first competitive V8 Supercars session at Phillip Island on top of the time sheets, narrowly missing the existing lap record in the process.

The Fujitsu GRM Holden ran a best of 1:32.34s to top the 30 minute session for rookies and the bottom 50 percent of the championship standings.

The 20-year-old is looking for a big result this weekend to rebound from a disastrous Gold Coast 600, where his car was plagued by an electrical fault.

McLaughlin’s best time came just prior to the halfway mark and was less than 0.3s shy of Craig Lowndes practice record from 2000.

McLaughlin’s final lap, completed after the chequered flag, fell just 0.1s short of his earlier time.

Michael Caruso was second fastest in his Norton Nissan, 0.05s adrift of McLaughlin.

Tim Slade improved with his final lap to be third ahead of Tony D’Alberto, Todd Kelly, Russell Ingall, Chaz Mostert, Tim Balnchard, Lee Holdsworth and Alexandre Premat.

David Wall was 11th after surviving a wild spin at Lukey Heights, while Moffat, Dean Fiore and Maro Engel all endured offs at the Turn 4 hairpin.

The session was run in cool and sunny conditions with a moderate tail wind pushing the cars down the front straight.

The first of two full-field practice sessions of the day will get underway at 1250 local time.
